Carmen “Noxoich” Moreno
Carmen Moreno is a lineal descendant of the Tachi and Wukchumni Yokut tribes and Hispanic from the Central Valley. Throughout her childhood, she was taught many cultural traditions, language skills, and as an adult, basketry. She is the daughter of the late Lawona “Oswick” Icho Jasso who was a Tachi language teacher and basket weaver. Working with her late Mother, Brother Gregory Ignacio, and family led her to have a positive outlook on her culture. The family worked together in many ways — from learning the language, practicing cultural traditions, telling stories, singing songs, reciting prayers, gathering basket materials, and most of all, demonstrating respect to the land and others. As a family, they would go out and educate the community at different events, sharing their culture and traditions.
She lives near the foothills in Orosi, CA with her husband and son. She spent over 25 years in the medical field as a CNA, Medical Assistant, Health Educator, and a Lactation Educator. She currently works with Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival (AICLS) as a Program Assistant.
