Tamborazo Junior
Tamborazo Junior formed in Fresno in 2012, when a group of young men — children of Oaxacan parents raised on chilena music, but coming out of rancho-style bandas — began playing informally for Los Diablos before they were an official group. The name came from a hangout with Mixtecos Unidos, when someone went around asking everyone’s names and so many answered “junior” that it stuck. Today, the group is a banda de viento with nine members, styled after founding member Bernardino Flores’s father’s own band. Almost all are second-generation, raised in the U.S. from infancy, and mostly trace back to San Miguel Cuevas. Fresno now has at least 20 chilena bands, part of a scene rooted in groups like Grupo Nuu Yuko, the first diablo group out of Cuevas.
